What is hip core decompression?
Hip core decompression, also known as femoral head decompression, is a surgical procedure performed to treat avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip. AVN occurs when the blood supply to the femoral head (the ball-shaped top of the thighbone) is compromised, leading to the death of bone tissue. Hip core decompression aims to relieve pressure within the femoral head, reduce pain, and promote the regeneration of healthy bone.

Core Decompression: A larger diameter hole is drilled into the femoral head, reaching the central area of the necrosis. This technique aims to remove a core of the necrotic bone, relieve pressure, and stimulate new bone growth.
4. Bone Grafting: In some cases, bone grafting may be performed during hip core decompression. A bone graft, typically taken from another part of the patient's body or sourced from a donor, is placed into the drilled hole to support bone regeneration and provide a scaffold for new bone growth.
5. Postoperative Care: After the procedure, patients will need to follow a rehabilitation program, including physical therapy, to restore strength, range of motion, and mobility. Weight-bearing restrictions may be implemented to allow for proper healing of the bone.
